Get great deals on Black Friday shopping
Black Friday coupons are primarily distributed online, and are available well in advance of the actual sale event. You'll find lots of websites dedicated to Black Friday, with direct links to money-saving coupons and tools to help you comparison shop to find the best deals before heading to the mall. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of Black Friday shopping, but you need to take it slow when it comes to coupons and price comparisons. In addition to carefully reading the fine print, you need to see exactly when the advertised price is valid and whether there are any limitations or exclusions in place.
Black Friday Coupons: More than Meets the Eye
Consumer advocacy groups emphasize the importance of reading the fine print on Black Friday coupons. Black Friday is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and businesses are extremely competitive in their attempts to lure in shoppers. Unfortunately, in some cases, this means that some advertisers will use deceptive methods. For example, you may see a laptop computer advertised for an incredibly low price, but if you don't read the fine print, you will miss that you can only get that price after you complete a mail-in rebate within a specified period of time.
There are all kinds of conditions advertisers will hide in the fine print and every year, never-before-seen tricks seem to come along. Protect yourself by not only reading it, but fully understanding it.
Time limitation is another common condition attached to Black Friday coupons. For example, the advertised price might only be available from the store's opening until 12:00 noon on Black Friday, or the coupon might only be honored during a limited number of store hours. Again, these types of conditions are typically buried in the fine print and in most cases, advertisers will indicate in the fine print what the item's price will be outside those limited hours. If it isn't, you might be better off choosing a different store if you're not sure you can complete your purchase during the indicated time.
Finally, be aware of the many different types of limitations and exclusions that retailers and advertisers will attach to coupons. Examples of other things to watch for include:
- Prices which are only valid if you purchase a specified minimum number of the advertised item
- Strict limitations on the number of advertised items you can purchase
- All sales using coupons are final
- No cash refunds are available; only in-store credit will be offered for returns
- Exchanges are available for identical items only, in case of a defect with the original item
- Coupons can only be used in tandem with a store club membership card
Protect Yourself on Black Friday
Whenever you're dealing with Black Friday ads or coupons, be sure to bring the original with you to the store when you're shopping, so you can present it in case there's any dispute at the cash register. If you have any issues regarding a coupon's validity and you firmly believe you're in the right, insist on speaking to a member of store management, as it's unlikely that the cashier will have the ability to override programmed prices in the store system.
Retailers publish their Black Friday coupons well in advance, so you have plenty of time to hunt down the best deals and plan your shopping. Perhaps the most important thing to remember on Black Friday is to not leave home without a plan. With the sheer number of shoppers in the stores, you'll quickly find yourself overwhelmed if you're just trying to browse casually for holiday deals.
